August
2010 - Piedmont News
From
The President
There is not a whole lot to report on. We are still reconciling
the Asheville Show. There are still some things to be finished and
we will be having a complete financial report in September’s Password.
I have requested a Board of Director’s Meeting for the latter part
of August. Once I have the date confirmed, it will be added to the
website and any member is welcome to attend. If you have any issues
to be discussed, please e-mail me at Aliwcasey@aol.com.
Remember the NC State
Fair show is coming up and it will start the points over for the
coming year. The Paso’s will show on October 18th, 2010. This is
on a Monday and check-in for the horses is on Sunday afternoon on
October 17th. Flat Rock Farm will again be hosting a “Pig Picking”
for all the Paso people so make plans to attend.
To all of our members
who will be attending the Grand National Show in Perry, Ga. Good
Luck, do your best and have fun. Also remember that New Officers
will be elected in November at the Awards Banquet. Think about who
you would like to have as your Officers for the coming 2 years.
We need people who are committed to our breed and want the best
for our association and they must be willing to devote a lot of
time to the position. There will be a nominating form in the next
written “Password”. Take the time to fill it out and send it in.
Jill Graff and Rhonda Moreen are on the nominating committee.
Thanks,
Ali

Congratulations
to Micah Furr and Castile Centellas for
winning the non-trotting pleasure Reserve Championship at the Southern
Regional 4-H Horse Show, held in Clemson the last week
of July, 2010. Over 500 youth riders from 13 states took part in
this all discipline equine extravaganza. All ages from 9 to 19 compete
together and no adults are allowed to school the horses, as in all
4-H shows. The pleasure class had 27 entries and contained all the
gaited breeds. Micah of Rowan County also placed 4th out of 15 in
showing for mare conformation and made the final cut for showmanship
out of 46 entries. It really was something to see, as every stall
was filled and every trailer space taken! Please see your county
extension agent if you would like to be involved in showing in 4-H.
It is very reasonable cost to show and well -run, with good manners
and safety being the primary concern.
Crosby Reed of Burke
County showed with her Peruvian Paso "Rico". Crosby won
all phases of the Southeast Region Hippology contest.

NC
Horse Council ACTION ALERT:
Renovation Funding for the Hunt Horse Complex Is
In Jeopardy!!
It has come
to the attention of the North Carolina Horse Council that The
NC General Assembly has seized funds in the amount of $1,000,000
from the NCDA & CS general reserves generated by the NC State
Fair for use elsewhere in state government. The State
Fair’s revenue and expenses can be segregated into three principle
areas: year-round operations, the Annual State Fair, and the Hunt
Horse Complex. While the Hunt Horse Complex (HHC) generates revenue,
its expenses often exceed their revenue and the HHC relies on
the dollars from the NC State Fair to sustain and improve its
operation.
The NC State Fair is an enterprise operation which means it is
self supporting and receives NO STATE APPROPRIATION for its operation
which includes the HHC. All the desperately needed improvements
at the Hunt Horse Complex the last two years are a direct result
of the State Fair utilizing money from the cash balance to fund
projects at the complex, projects that are vital to attract large
revenue generating equine events. Should this decision fail to
be reversed in a technical corrections bill, some of the major
projects targeted for start-up will be put on hold!
This is not the time for progress to be slowing down! We are asking
those of you who are represented by the legislators listed below
to please contact them and urge them to help reverse this action.
In addition, the North Carolina Horse Council will be contacting
key members of the General Assembly to remind them of the impact
of this decision on the $1.9 billion equine industry in our State.
Let them know:
-
The NC State Fair is an enterprise operations which means it
is self supporting and receives no state appropriation for its
operation which includes the Hunt Horse Complex.
-
The State Fair must maintain an adequate cash balance to deal
with the unforeseen such as bad weather and low fair attendance
or other natural crisis which produces low revenues.
-
With
the economic situation as it is in NC and throughout the country,
having a cash balance to offset any drop in facility utilization
is even more critical until we recover.
The State has just
raised rental rates at the Fairgrounds, effective January 1, 2011.
This includes raising the Hunt Horse Complex indoor arena rate
from $1000/day to $1200/day. Stall rates fees have also been raised.
Horse owners and show operators are willing to pay these fees
because we believe it will go back into the operation and maintenance
of the facility…NOT the State’s General Fund…from which no dollars
are received to help fund the HHC.
Simply put, this
appears to be taking dollars from the users of the NCDA&CS
facilities and does not seem fair and equitable to the Agricultural
and the Equine Community.
